Romance Book Title Design

Custom title design for romance

Irresistible cover title lettering

Trends in romance cover design are all over the map right now. Within the romance field there are many sub-genres, each calling for a slightly different look. My own preferred styles of lettering are elegant rather than syrupy. A fine line there, I know. But I try to navigate the border between over-the-top and tasteful, with scripts that create a bold statement yet behave themselves. This collection of title designs presents book covers that reflect different approaches, from those that sell based on the weight of the foil to the more contemporary styles that don’t declare their genre up front, but invite the reader to guess what is inside. I am going to start with romancey-romance. I personally like to walk around carrying these books in broad daylight, just to confuse people. Yes, you can have a brain and still like to read a story starring a wronged duchess and a roguish duke……

This project for author Karen Robards is a combination of custom calligraphy and typographic design. The author name begins as calligraphy but is carefully refined to have typographic substance. The scripts are the spontaneous sizzle, created with a lettering brush.

A collection of romance title designs showing the range from fancy to plain, historical to modern. Most of my book covers are commissioned by mainstream publishing houses. But I also work increasingly with authors directly on self-published books. If you are self-publishing consider setting yourself apart from the crowd with a custom typographic design that uniquely brands you and your books. Today’s market is highly competitive, and even with the trend towards electronic books the cover still has a big impact on sales. It is very satisfying to craft a beautiful, (and sizzling) book that has a special aura and a sensibility and is….irresistible.
